Here's a bit about earthquake/disaster kits, about which I have mixed feelings.
On one hand, since the government is apparently completely incompetent in the face of an emergency, one ought to be prepared.
On the other hand, it's completely unrealistic to list "a gallon of water per person per day" because a) how would one calculate how many days one will be displaced? and b) just the Tomato and I would have to haul around 8 gallons to get through 4 days. Which, if we ended up on foot, with a cat carrier, and camping gear...maybe they should list "wheelbarrow" as one of the items to keep in your emergency kit.
And on yet another hand, who's got storage space for all that gear? We're already overflowing our 700 square feet. Where exactly would we stash this truckload of stuff we probably won't get a chance to use?
And on a fourth hand, who's got funding for rechargeable radios, solar cell phone chargers, extra cash (!), and first aid kits? They should rename this the "Emergency Disaster Kit for Rich People."
